Life During Mercury Retrograde

Disclaimer: I am not an astrologer, these are simply my observations.

Mercury Retrograde - it’s that time again. Mercury goes retrograde 3-4 times a year, and the current one, which began July 8, goes until August 1, 2019.

The general impression I get from the astrology experts and all the online writings and posts that I see during a retrograde is that at this time, if anything can go wrong, it will.

I find it amusing that while drafting this article in my mind I found myself thinking “Rercury Metrograde” instead of “Mercury Retrograde” and that quickly morphed into “Wrecury Metrograde”.

The planet Mercury rules day-to-day expression, communication and relationships. For instance, when it comes to communication, an example of Mercury Retrograde might be that this article was more than half way done. When I returned to complete it, the article had disappeared. Nothing was left and I had to start over again from scratch and from memory.

During Mercury Retrograde, it is recommended to not:

  • Sign contracts

  • Initiate new projects

  • Accept or start a new job

  • Travel a lot

  • Purchase new computer equipment

  • Have elective surgery

Apparently ‘don’t bake cookies’ should be added to the above list.

The Cookie Experience

When Mercury first went retrograde, I decided to bake some of my favorite cookies, Coconut Butter Cookies.

All the ingredients were on hand, it was a cool day so the oven wouldn’t heat up the apartment too much, all systems were a go, IMO.

About 6 minutes into the baking time, I smelled the cookies burning. The cookies on the bottom sheet in the oven were burning so badly they were smoking! I whisked them out of the oven, put them on top of the stove where they finished baking.

The reason the cookies burned was because the bottom oven rack was directly over the heating element and they were too close to the heat. If I had noticed this beforehand and simply moved the rack, the cookies would not have burned.

They turned out OK minus the burned bottoms.

I mentioned this on my Facebook page and (you know it) every single comment mentioned something about the cookies burning because of Mercury Retrograde and folx good-heartedly recommended I should hold off on the baking until Mercury goes direct (August 1).

But Here’s The Thing

It doesn’t make sense to me that I can put the responsibility for my burned cookies and missing blog draft on Mercury Retrograde.

The cookies burned because I didn’t pay attention to where the cooking rack was placed. If I had noticed that and moved it, the cookies would have been fine.

The draft of this blog post disappeared because the wifi connection I have here at the new place is Slower. Than. Molasses. and I was moving too quickly for it to catch up. So while I had saved the post and done what I needed to do from this end, the wifi didn’t get the job done.

Mercury Retrograde is not the same as a get out of jail free card.

We are all responsible and accountable for our actions. Too often when anything goes wrong during a Mercury Retrograde, the response is to blame the retrograde instead of looking at and accepting responsibility for our part in what occurred.

That’s called by-passing.

Not everyone has the luxury and privilege to not sign a contract, not start a new job or not begin a new project during the time Mercury is Retrograde. We all need to do what we need to do, when we need to do it and how we need to do it.

While I agree that we are influenced by the planets, we are not controlled by them. Mercury Retrograde is an excellent time to slow down, pay attention to the details, plan ahead and do what can be done to avoid any potential train wrecks, while at the same time acknowledging that we can do everything we’re ‘supposed’ to do and it might not turn out as we had hoped or planned.

IMO that’s not called Mercury Retrograde, it’s called Life.

Here’s To New Beginnings,

Janet
